Portable Air Compressor Sizing Calculator
Tick the tools you will run at the same time and get the CFM you need, plus a matching Brüder compressor.
How the sizing works
Add up the average air draw of every tool running at the same time, then add a safety margin. The calculator picks the smallest Brüder model whose free air delivery covers that total. Tools that run flat out (breakers, blasting, pumps, post drivers) rule out piston compressors, because piston units are built for intermittent duty.
Need to check a single tool? See the air tool CFM consumption chart. Working at altitude or in the heat? Use the derating calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I size an air compressor?
Add up the CFM of every tool that runs at the same time, then add a margin of 15 to 25 percent. Choose a compressor whose free air delivery is at or above that number.
How many CFM do I need for an impact wrench?
A 1/2 inch impact wrench averages about 6 CFM and a 3/4 inch about 12 CFM when sized conservatively. See the full tool CFM chart on this site for more.
Should I choose a piston or rotary screw compressor?
Piston compressors suit intermittent tools such as tyre work and rattle guns. Rotary screw suits continuous tools such as breakers, blasting and pumps, and larger demand.
Do I need a bigger compressor at altitude or in hot weather?
Yes. Thinner or hotter air reduces delivered airflow. Use the derating calculator to see how much.
